New York State is a major hub for the distribution of illicit drugs due to the massive demand created by the population of New York City. Major trafficking of schedule I drugs like cocaine and heroin occurs throughout the state, with multi-kilo packages of these illegal substances being shipped through tractor-trailers, flatbed trucks, cargo, and even the mail system. New York State is used as a supply destination to provide for both NYC as well as many States on the East Coast, north into Canada, and even shipped to Europe.
Crack cocaine has become a major issue in all cities within New York State, serving a less potent, highly addictive form of cocaine to low-income suburban and semi-rural locations, as well as the streets of major cities. Heroin is also readily available in the city and State, imported from South America and more recently Afghanistan. Major efforts are being made constantly to curb the use of heroin with the State, however heroin, cocaine, and crack remain the largest problem drugs in the area, with increasing use being recorded each year.
New York State has the most substance abuse treatment admissions, 3x as many as the State of California.
